Start with the payout

A posted 3:2 blackjack payout returns $15 in profit on a $10 winning natural; a 6:5 payout returns $12. This arithmetic compares the payout on that hand, not the overall odds of winning a session.

Understand soft 17

A soft 17 includes an ace valued at 11. A table may require the dealer to draw on that total or to stand. MGM’s GameSense guide notes that blackjack variations can use different rules.

Ask before the first hand

Check the written rules for doubling, splitting and surrender. A correct decision under one ruleset may not transfer to another. Strategy cannot guarantee a profit; set a spending and time limit before playing.
